Business Remedies. Sourav and Gunjan Gupta, the husband-wife duo from Kolkata, have made a name for themselves by creating GunjanApps Studios, a platform dedicated to developing meaningful, simple, and accessible digital apps for children. Their story reflects a unique perspective on digital innovation.
Before venturing into entrepreneurship, Sourav spent over a decade in the IT industry, working with companies like L&T Infotech and IBM. Gunjan, on the other hand, was a certified Android developer with experience in mobile and web development. Their turning point came when they moved to the US and became parents. Like many modern families, they were searching for content that was fun, educational, provided meaningful screen time, and was free of ads for their child.
Disappointed by the available options in the market, they decided to create something better themselves. What began as a side project soon turned into a full-fledged venture by 2016. They returned to India and founded GunjanApps Studios without any external funding. They focused on users from India’s tier 2 and tier 3 cities and started developing educational games in Indian languages.
Their strategy was simple-create free, lightweight apps that run easily on low-end smartphones, target young children, and avoid intrusive advertising or monetization methods. What they lacked in funding, they made up for in focus and speed.
The results were remarkable-GunjanApps crossed 350 million downloads across its app portfolio. Titles like “123 Numbers Counting Games” and “Hindi Alphabets Learning” topped the education category on India’s Google Play Store.
Impressed the Sharks with Clarity and Data-Driven Growth
GunjanApps became especially popular among parents in non-metro areas, where high-quality educational content in local languages was rare. Their success stemmed from a deep understanding of the Indian digital consumer-someone who values simplicity, trust, and safety for their children.
In 2023, their growing popularity caught the attention of Shark Tank India. On the show, they impressed the sharks with their clarity and data-driven growth, securing Rs. 2.5 crore investment for just 2.5% equity, valuing the company at Rs. 100 crore. This was one of the most generous valuations seen on the show and sparked significant discussion on social media.
While some questioned the simplicity of their products and the low barrier to entry in developing such apps, many hailed it as a bootstrapped success story meeting India’s real digital needs. For the founders, real validation came from millions of downloads and happy parents, not industry accolades.
Expanding into Puzzles, Drawing, and Basic English Learning
GunjanApps’ strength lies in its focus on user behavior and data. They never chased flashy features or complex gamification. The team trusted user feedback, performance metrics, and iterative improvements. With a lean team of less than 15 members, they remained agile and expanded into various categories like puzzles, drawing, and basic English learning. Though cash-flow remains positive and popular among users, challenges remain. With increasing competition in the edtech gaming space, they need to continuously innovate while keeping their core audience engaged. Exploring monetization through subscriptions or premium content will be crucial in the coming years.
Still, their core philosophy remains unchanged-to create meaningful, simple, and accessible digital experiences for Indian children. Today, Gunjan and Sourav Gupta are not just founders of an app studio but are seen as quiet revolutionaries who tapped into a market often overlooked by flashy startups and well-funded unicorns. Their journey is a reminder that with deep local insight, consistency, and a clear purpose, it is possible to build something impactful-without noise, without hype, and without compromise.
