Business Remedies | Charu Bhatia | Senior News Editor | In conversation with Dr. H.L. Gupta, Founder of Gupta Dental Clinic
From humble beginnings in a small Rajasthan village to running one of Jaipur’s most respected dental clinics, Dr. H.L. Gupta’s journey is a story of perseverance, ethics, and an unshakable dedication to patient care. Founder of Gupta Dental Clinic, which now operates two branches in the city, Dr. Gupta has spent nearly three decades blending modern dentistry with compassionate service. In this candid conversation, he talks about his early life, the philosophy that guides his practice, and why he believes patients are the greatest teachers.
Q: Dr. Gupta, could you tell us about your journey from your childhood to establishing your clinic in Jaipur?
A: I was born in Geejgarh, a village in Rajasthan’s Dausa district. My father was a doctor in the village, and I grew up watching him care for people selflessly. That inspired me to pursue medicine. After completing my schooling there, I cleared the Pre-Medical Examination in my very first attempt in 1985 and joined SMS Medical College, Jaipur. Later, I pursued my Master’s in Dental Surgery from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow, one of India’s premier medical institutions.
Before starting my own clinic, I worked in different dental practices, gaining practical experience and understanding patient needs. In 1996, I, along with Mrs. Sangeeta Gupta, established Gupta Dental Clinic in Jaipur. Today, we have two branches, one at Kissan Marg and another at Mahaveer Nagar, and continue to serve patients with the same dedication we started with.
Q: You’ve dedicated your life to dentistry. What do you believe are the most important factors for success in this field?
A: Hard work, patience, and determination are non-negotiable. Dentistry is constantly evolving, and you need to keep learning to stay relevant. Having a good mentor to guide you is also essential. I see every patient as a learning opportunity; they teach us something new every day. For me, I’m not God to my patients; patients are God to me. That mindset keeps you humble and committed.
Q: Many people say medicine has become a business. What’s your take on this?
A: I’ve always believed money is a byproduct. If you focus on giving the best service, money will naturally follow. My priority has always been patient care. If you put service first, everything else falls into place.
Q: Are all the tools and equipment you use in your clinic made in India?
A: Not entirely. Some equipment is imported to ensure we can provide the best possible care, while others are manufactured in India. My goal is simple, to use the tools that deliver the most accurate and effective results for the patient.
Q: What advice would you give to young aspirants in the field of dental sciences?
A: Whatever you choose to do, aim to be the best at it. Strive for excellence and never stop learning. Dentistry is not just about treating teeth; it’s about treating people. Keep that human connection alive in your work.
Q: How important are ethics in today’s medical field? Do you think they’re being upheld?
A: Ethics are the foundation of medicine. A doctor must clearly explain a patient’s condition, the treatment options, and potential risks. Informed consent is essential, especially before major procedures. Sadly, I’ve noticed a decline in ethical standards among some practitioners today. We must remember that our duty is to the patient first, not to profits or personal gain.
Q: Who do you see as your biggest competitor in Jaipur’s dental industry?
A: I don’t see other dentists as competitors; they’re my colleagues. My focus is on delivering the best possible service to patients. If you do that, patients will naturally trust and return to you.
Q: What makes Gupta Dental Clinic stand out from other dental practices?
A: We stick to ethical standards and maintain transparency with our patients. Our diagnosis is always accurate, our communication is clear, and we prioritize patient comfort. We rely mostly on word-of-mouth publicity, which I believe is the strongest proof of patient satisfaction. Skills, knowledge, and a respectful attitude towards patients, these are what build a doctor’s reputation, and we’ve always followed that principle.
Q: Apart from running the clinic, how else do you engage with dentistry?
A: Dentistry isn’t just my profession, it’s my passion and my hobby. I’m also a professor at Rajasthan Dental College. My teaching hours are till 3 PM, after which I head to the clinic. Teaching keeps me updated with the latest advancements, and interacting with students reminds me that learning never stops.
Q: What has been the most rewarding part of your journey so far?
A: The trust my patients place in me is the biggest reward. When someone comes in with discomfort and leaves with relief and a smile, that’s priceless. Knowing that our work genuinely improves lives keeps me motivated every single day.
Q: Finally, what is your long-term vision for Gupta Dental Clinic?
A: I want the clinic to remain a place where patients feel heard, respected, and cared for. Technology will keep advancing, but our values, ethical practice, patient-first service, and continuous learning, will remain unchanged.
