Rajshree Upadhyaya | Business Remedies | March 18, 2025 | Neeraj Kakkar, the co-founder and CEO of Hector Beverages, has built a brand that has redefined how India consumes traditional beverages. Born and raised in Haryana, he pursued a postgraduate program in management from MDI Gurgaon before earning an MBA from The Wharton School, where he was recognized as a Palmer Scholar, the highest academic honor at the institution. His corporate journey began with Union Carbide and Wipro, but it was during his time at Coca-Cola, where he served as General Manager from 2001 to 2008, that he gained deep insights into the beverage industry. The experience at Coca-Cola gave him a front-row seat to the dynamics of the market, consumer preferences, and the immense potential that lay in India’s beverage space.
In 2009, he co-founded Hector Beverages with Suhas Misra, James Nuttall, and Neeraj Biyani. The company initially launched Tzinga, an energy drink designed to compete with market giants. While Tzinga saw moderate success, Kakkar and his team soon realized a much larger opportunity—bringing back India’s traditional drinks in a way that resonated with modern consumers. In 2013, Paper Boat was born, with a vision to revive nostalgic flavors like Aam Panna, Jaljeera, and Aam Ras. The brand name itself was a deliberate choice, designed to evoke childhood memories, the simplicity of homemade drinks, and the joy of carefree summer days.
To bring this vision to life, Hector Beverages set up a manufacturing plant in Manesar, Haryana, in 2010, followed by a larger facility in Mysuru, Karnataka, in 2014. The Mysuru plant, with a capacity to produce 380 bottles per minute, was a significant upgrade from the Manesar facility’s 80 bottles per minute. With a production capability of nearly 10 million pouches per month, the brand was now equipped to meet growing demand, not just in India but also in international markets.
The company’s rise was bolstered by strategic investments and guidance from some of the most respected names in the industry. N.R. Narayana Murthy’s Catamaran Ventures, Kanwaljit Singh of Helion Ventures, and marketing expert Shripad Nadkarni played pivotal roles in shaping the brand’s growth. Their support, combined with Kakkar’s relentless pursuit of excellence, transformed Paper Boat from a nostalgic idea into a household name.
As of 2024, Hector Beverages has reached a valuation of over Rs.1,600 crore, approximately $200 million, with Kakkar and the founding team holding a 6.93% stake in the company. His net worth has crossed Rs.112 crore, a testament to the impact Paper Boat has made in the industry. More than just numbers, though, the brand has successfully created a bridge between tradition and modernity, bringing back flavors that might have otherwise faded away.
Through Paper Boat, Neeraj Kakkar has demonstrated that innovation is not just about creating something new but also about rediscovering and reintroducing the old in a way that fits contemporary lifestyles. His journey is one of vision, resilience, and a deep understanding of the cultural and emotional connections people have with food and beverages. For those who want to dive deeper into his thoughts and experiences, his interview offers an inspiring glimpse into the mind behind Paper Boat.
