At just 12 years old, she was married off and sent to live with her husband’s family in a Mumbai slum. Trapped in a household where she was treated as an outsider, she suffered in silence until her father intervened and brought her back home. But returning to her village did not mean freedom from suffering. She was met with taunts, isolation, and an overwhelming sense of despair. The crushing weight of rejection pushed her to attempt suicide—an act of desperation that, thankfully, did not claim her life. That moment, however, became a turning point. She realized that if life had given her another chance, she had to make it count.
Determined to take charge of her destiny, she returned to Mumbai at the age of 16 to live with her uncle. The city, though ruthless, held the promise of a fresh start. She found work in a garment factory, sewing clothes for a mere 15 paise a day. The money was barely enough to survive, but she refused to let it define her future. With keen observation and a hunger to learn, she picked up new skills, mastering industrial sewing machines and increasing her daily earnings to five rupees. Her ambition grew stronger with each passing day, and when she learned about government loans available to scheduled castes, she seized the opportunity. With financial aid, she started her own small tailoring business, which later expanded into a furniture venture.
Her relentless drive to build something of her own led her beyond small enterprises. She ventured into the entertainment industry, establishing KS Film Production and producing her first movie, “Khairlanji,” a film that was later dubbed in multiple languages. But filmmaking was just another stepping stone. Real estate soon caught her attention, and she dived into the business world, quickly earning recognition for her sharp instincts and strong professional network.
A defining moment in her career arrived in 2001 when she became involved with Kamani Tubes, a struggling company on the verge of liquidation. Instead of shying away from the immense challenge, she took it head-on. With extraordinary leadership and business acumen, she restructured the company, revived its operations, and steered it back to profitability. What seemed impossible to many became a reality under her guidance, not just saving the business but also preserving the livelihoods of countless employees. Her success story began to inspire entrepreneurs across the country, proving that even the most challenging circumstances could be turned around with determination and the right mindset.
Beyond her business ventures, Kalpana remained deeply connected to the struggles of the underprivileged. Understanding firsthand the hardships faced by marginalized communities, she founded the Kalpana Saroj Foundation. Through this initiative, she helped individuals access government welfare schemes and supported the education of children in need. Her contributions to society extended beyond financial success; she became a beacon of hope for those who had once been told they had no future.
Her achievements did not go unnoticed. In 2013, she was honored with the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for her contributions to trade and industry. She was also appointed to the board of Bhartiya Mahila Bank, an institution dedicated to empowering women financially. With each milestone, she continued to redefine the boundaries of what was possible for someone from her background.
