In this candid conversation, Ms. Neelam Saxena, Principal of VSPK International School, Jaipur, shares her journey as an educator, her vision for holistic student development, and her thoughts on the future of Indian education. From embracing technology like AI to emphasizing life skills such as adaptability, collaboration, and financial literacy, her perspective highlights how schools can prepare students for the challenges of tomorrow.
Q: You are a principal of such a reputed school in Jaipur. Kindly tell us about your educational journey so far.
A: I have been associated with VSPK International School as a principal for four years now, and it has been a truly enriching journey. Today, the school has close to 3,000 students, each with unique talents and aspirations.
My inspiration to enter this field came from my father, who was an educator at Kendriya Vidyalaya. Watching him transform the lives of his students left a deep impression on me. When I began my career as a teacher, my goal was never limited to academics alone. I always believed in teaching values, creativity, patience, and empathy. To me, every child was unique and deserved an approach tailored to their strengths.
When I transitioned into the role of principal, the scope of responsibility expanded. It was no longer about my classroom alone; it was about an entire ecosystem, teachers, staff, parents, and of course, the students. Leadership brought new challenges, but it also gave me the privilege to shape a school community where the focus is not only on excellence in academics but also on nurturing values and life skills. The biggest lesson I carry is that empathy and understanding are not optional; they are essential qualities for any educator who wishes to bring meaningful change.
Q: What values and skills do you think students must develop in today’s society?
A: The world today is changing faster than ever, and education must keep pace. I believe the foremost skill that students must learn is adaptability. Without it, they will struggle to cope with the constant evolution of systems, whether in education, technology, or careers. The National Education Policy is a good example of how change is inevitable, and adaptability makes that transition smoother.
Alongside adaptability, collaboration is a key life skill. In a globalized world, students need to appreciate and work with diversity. Learning to respect different perspectives prepares them for real-world challenges. Another vital skill is cultivating an innovative mindset. Instead of rote learning, we must encourage students to think critically and creatively.
However, I firmly believe that all of this rests on one strong foundation, humanity. If students do not develop compassion, awareness, and self-regulation, no skill can truly help them succeed. Education must also go beyond traditional subjects. Besides, financial literacy is often overlooked but is vital. Teaching students about money management and financial independence equips them for life outside school and prevents struggles later on.
Q: With so many schools in Jaipur and across Rajasthan, how does VSPK International stand apart?
A: Every school offers education, but what sets VSPK apart is our emphasis on holistic development. We don’t just aim for academic excellence; we ensure that students excel in sports, cultural activities, and skill-based learning as well. Our students have represented the school at national and even international sporting events, which is something we take great pride in.
Equally important is our school environment. Teachers here are given a sense of freedom and flexibility in their work. When educators feel trusted and empowered, they create a better learning atmosphere. This flexibility has been one of the cornerstones of our success, as it fosters innovation in teaching methods and allows students to benefit from diverse learning styles.
Q: AI is reshaping many sectors. How do you see its role in education?
A: AI is already making its presence felt in classrooms, and I see it as a largely positive force. Today’s generation is pressed for time, and technology helps them learn more efficiently. AI can support personalized learning, giving students resources tailored to their needs. It complements the principle of “learning by doing,” which is so important.
Of course, there are valid concerns. Over-reliance on technology can dampen creativity. But if we strike the right balance, AI can actually stimulate innovation.
Q: What kind of programmes and events does VSPK International organize for student growth?
A: At VSPK, we believe that learning must extend beyond textbooks. Being a CBSE-affiliated school, we align with the curriculum, but we go a step further by incorporating skill-based learning and exposure-driven activities.
We regularly host workshops and talk shows where renowned professionals, from fashion designers to entrepreneurs, interact with students. These sessions give them first-hand insight into industries and help bridge the gap between theory and practice. One initiative I am particularly proud of is our collaboration with AU Bank. Through this partnership, students get opportunities for training and internships, offering them practical exposure to banking and finance. Such programmes ensure that by the time they leave school, they are confident, industry-ready, and aware of how the real-world functions.
Q: Beyond academics, how do you encourage overall personality development?
A: Education without personality development is incomplete. At VSPK, we focus heavily on life skills. We encourage students to practice critical thinking, which helps them analyze and solve problems independently. Communication skills are another pillar, we train students to express themselves clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing.
Teamwork and collaboration are also emphasized. In today’s interconnected world, working effectively in teams is just as important as individual performance. An often-overlooked but vital skill is active listening. We encourage students to listen attentively and empathetically, which in turn builds understanding and helps them navigate challenges with sensitivity. These soft skills equip them not only for academics but also for personal and professional life beyond school.
Q: How do you envision the future of education in India?
A: The future of education will be dominated by technology. AI, digital classrooms, and virtual platforms will transform the way students learn and teachers teach. Education will become more personalized, catering to individual needs and learning speeds. Virtual learning also offers flexibility, saving time and giving students access to resources far beyond the classroom walls.
Q: What challenges do schools face today?
A: One of the most pressing challenges is financial sustainability. Many parents in private schools delay fee payments, which makes it difficult to manage operational expenses and invest in resources. Schools are often taken for granted, but they require timely support to function effectively.
Q: What is your long-term vision for VSPK International School?
A: My vision is to see every student leave our school with a sense of purpose. Academic excellence is important, but I want students to go out into the world as confident, compassionate, and innovative individuals.
We work with the motto of providing the best possible environment to nurture creativity and innovation. Beyond academics, I want our students to embrace the idea of global citizenship, to appreciate cultural diversity, build strong community ties, and contribute positively to society. The world is becoming more interconnected, and I want our students to be prepared not only as professionals but also as empathetic global citizens.
Q: Finally, what advice would you like to give to young minds?
A: My advice is simple yet timeless, always strive to be a good human first. Success, knowledge, and achievements will follow if you remain grounded, empathetic, and true to your values.
