Shruti Kothari | Jaipur | Business Remedies. | Adani Enterprises Ltd is set to commence operations at its new copper smelting facility, Kutch Copper, within the next four weeks. Felipe Williams, the company’s head of metals, announced this development at an International Copper Association conference in Santiago, Chile.
Kutch Copper, located in Mundra, Gujarat, represents a significant investment of approximately $1.2 billion in its first phase, aiming for an annual production capacity of 500,000 metric tons of refined copper. Upon completion of the second phase, the facility’s capacity will double to 1 million metric tons per annum, positioning it as the world’s largest single-location custom smelter.

The commissioning of this facility comes at a time when Asian smelters are facing challenges due to tight copper concentrate supplies and negative treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs). Despite these market conditions, Adani Enterprises views the venture as a long-term opportunity, aligning with India’s anticipated surge in copper demand driven by industrial growth and energy transition initiatives.

The Indian Ministry of Mines has indicated that once Kutch Copper reaches full capacity, India will achieve self-sufficiency in refined copper production, eliminating the need for imports. This development is particularly significant given the country’s current dependence on imports to meet its copper demand. The commencement of operations at Kutch Copper marks Adani Enterprises’ entry into the metals sector, reflecting the group’s commitment to contributing to India’s industrial growth and energy transition goals. The project is expected to create approximately 2,000 direct and 5,000 indirect employment opportunities, further bolstering the local economy.
