Business Remedies | Rajshree Upadhyaya | June 09,2025 | AAS Vidyalaya’s journey is a compelling tale of innovation, empathy, and mission-driven entrepreneurship. It began with a question that was both simple and profound: What if quality education could reach every child, regardless of their location or financial means? Founders Vikas and Leena Kakwani, he an IIT Roorkee and IIM Lucknow alumnus with a strong corporate background, and she a child psychologist deeply attuned to young learners, launched AAS Vidyalaya, short for “Anytime Anywhere School,” with a vision to transform how India’s underserved children learn. Confronting a grim reality, millions of out-of-school children and abysmal secondary education dropout rates, they set out to build a solution that transcended physical and economic barriers.
Their approach was both digital and deeply human. AAS Vidyalaya introduced an Android app and website offering a structured, curriculum-aligned learning experience for Grades 6 to 10, complete with live classes, assignments, progress tracking, and teacher mentorship. But realizing that access to smartphones or stable internet was a luxury in many rural areas, they created “Education Cafés”, community-based learning centers equipped with tablets, internet connectivity, and local facilitators. These cafés became digital classrooms for children in villages, urban slums, and labor colonies, allowing them to experience schooling without stepping inside a traditional school building.
In January 2022, the Kakwanis brought their vision to Shark Tank India, pitching AAS Vidyalaya with confidence and passion. They made one of the boldest asks on the show, Rs. 1.5 crore for just 3 percent equity, valuing their company at Rs. 50 crore. Their pitch emphasized the blend of B2C and B2B models: while the app served individual students, the café model operated through CSR partnerships with companies like Godrej, TATA Group’s TMILL, and ACC. Their goal was to create long-term, sustainable impact by working hand-in-hand with corporations that wanted to invest in community education. Financially, their revenues had risen from Rs. 70 lakh in FY 2020–21 to Rs. 1.5 crore the following year, with projections targeting Rs. 5 crore.
While Aman Gupta and Anupam Mittal opted out, citing doubts over scalability and viability for private investors, three sharks, Peyush Bansal, Namita Thapar, and Ashneer Grover, stepped up, offering Rs. 1.5 crore for 15 percent equity. Though the deal did not materialize post-show, the exposure gave AAS Vidyalaya nationwide recognition. App downloads crossed 300,000, and their education café model gained momentum in states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar.
By 2024, AAS Vidyalaya’s impact expanded through a strategic alliance with Primebook, which enabled the distribution of affordable laptops and tablets to over 2,000 students. This further strengthened their hybrid learning model and widened their digital footprint. At the same time, the platform earned affiliations with CBSE and state boards across six states, solidifying its academic credibility. More than 20,000 video lessons and over 100,000 question-and-answer entries became accessible to learners from the most underserved communities.
Seed funding from the Department of Science & Technology under the NIDHI initiative, support from the Tata Trusts, and partnerships with UNICEF reinforced the institutional backing of their mission. Yet, the Kakwanis’ true strength lies in their balanced leadership, Vikas driving operations and technology, and Leena anchoring the emotional and psychological dimensions of student learning.
AAS Vidyalaya today is more than an edtech startup. It is a living response to one of India’s most persistent challenges: equitable access to education. By blending high-quality digital instruction with on-ground support systems, Vikas and Leena Kakwani are proving that inclusive innovation can thrive in a business model, and that social impact can scale. Their mission echoes far beyond Shark Tank, illuminating a path where learning truly becomes anytime, anywhere, and for everyone.
