Jaipur | Business Remedies | April 23,2025 | From the dusty lanes of Bikaner in Rajasthan to the fluorescent aisles of supermarkets across the globe, the journey of Bikanervala is one of flavor, legacy, and sheer entrepreneurial grit. It all began in 1905 when Lal Chand Agarwal started a modest sweet shop near Kote Gate in Bikaner. At a time when recipes were passed down like heirlooms, his shop became known for its unmatched bhujia and sweets, drawing in locals who returned not just for the food but for the warmth and consistency of the experience. That little shop, Bikaner Namkeen Bhandar, laid the foundation for what would eventually become a household name.
As India stirred to life in the years following independence, Lal Chand’s sons, Kedarnath and Satyanarayan, dreamt of something bigger. With little more than ambition and buckets of freshly made rasgullas and bhujia in hand, they made their way to Delhi. Chandni Chowk, a melting pot of culture and commerce, became their launchpad. Amid the hustle of Paranthe Wali Gali, their small stall began drawing crowds, not least because of the unique flavors but also because the brothers came from Bikaner, a name that already carried culinary weight. Soon, regulars began calling them “Bikanervala”, a nod to their roots, and the name stuck, evolving from a street nickname into a trusted brand.
As the years passed and Delhi expanded, so did Bikanervala’s presence. The 1960s marked the brand’s evolution from a single shop to multiple outlets across the capital. What remained unchanged was their commitment to purity, authenticity, and a deeply Indian identity.
While the rest of the country began adopting packaged snacks and global tastes, Bikanervala continued to refine its roots, offering a growing menu of sweets and savories that honored tradition while keeping pace with changing preferences.
A pivotal moment arrived in the late 1980s, when the next generation, led by Shyam Sundar Aggarwal, introduced the Bikano brand. This wasn’t just a product extension, it was a shift in mindset. For the first time, the rich textures of Indian namkeen and mithai were offered in hygienic, attractively packed formats that traveled well, both across the country and overseas. It was Bikano that catapulted Bikanervala from a restaurant-and-retail chain to a global food company. Suddenly, Indian homes in New Jersey, Dubai, and Sydney had shelves stocked with Bikano’s signature bhujia, mathri, and gulab jamuns, each pack a fragrant reminder of home.
Even as Bikano surged, Bikanervala didn’t stop innovating. The early 2000s saw them branching into quick-service restaurants with Bikano Chat Cafes, an attempt to make India’s street food safer, cleaner, and more accessible to a growing urban population. Then came their boutique hotel in Hyderabad, a testament to their desire to extend hospitality beyond the plate. These new ventures were not mere experiments, they reflected an expanding vision grounded in the same values that defined their sweets over a century ago.
Today, Bikanervala has blossomed into an empire of over 150 outlets, with a strong presence not only across India but also in countries like the UAE, Singapore, Nepal, and the United States. Its production units in Delhi, Noida, and Haryana churn out products that serve both walk-in customers and international retail chains. With a monthly footfall crossing one crore and an annual turnover exceeding Rs.1,300 crore, it has grown into one of India’s most successful ethnic food brands.
Behind this remarkable success lies the legacy of Kedarnath Aggarwal, affectionately known as Kakaji. His passing in November 2023 marked the end of an era, but the values he embodied, simplicity, hard work, and relentless dedication to quality, still echo in every Bikanervala outlet. The business remains a family-run affair, with his son Shyam Sundar Aggarwal and grandson Manish Aggarwal leading the charge. Despite repeated buyout offers from large
conglomerates, the family has chosen to remain private, preserving the brand’s authenticity and independence.
In a world where culinary trends shift with each season, Bikanervala has stayed rooted in the flavors of home while embracing the tools of modern enterprise. It isn’t just a brand, it’s a story of resilience, legacy, and the irresistible magic of Indian food, carried from a corner of Rajasthan to every corner of the world.
