Shruti Kothari | Jaipur | Business Remedies | April 14,2025 | The Indian government has announced an ambitious plan to invest Rs. 10 lakh crore in overhauling the nation’s highway infrastructure, with a significant focus on the northeastern states. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized that this initiative aims to elevate the region’s road quality to match international standards.
During a recent address in the Rajya Sabha, Minister Gadkari highlighted that Assam alone is set to receive Rs. 3 lakh crore for national highway development. Key projects include the Rs. 5,800 crore Guwahati Ring Road, expected to be completed by December 2027, and a Rs. 12,000 crore tunnel under the Brahmaputra River in Dibrugarh, currently in the sanctioning phase.
The minister also pointed out that, over the past decade, the central government has sanctioned national highway projects worth nearly Rs. 3 lakh crore for the northeastern region. This investment has increased the length of national highways in the area from approximately 10,800 km in 2014 to 15,740 km currently. However, challenges persist, particularly regarding land acquisition in states like Nagaland and Meghalaya.
Minister Gadkari warned that delays in resolving these issues could lead to the closure of some projects. In contrast, Assam has been commended for its efficient handling of land acquisition processes, facilitating smoother project implementation. This substantial investment is expected to not only improve connectivity but also boost economic activities, tourism, and overall development in the northeastern region.
