The Journey of Perfora’s Co-Founders Jatan Bawa and Tushar Khurana

Business Remedies | Rajshree Upadhyaya | With the aim of redefining dental hygiene, two entrepreneurs, Jatan Bawa and Tushar Khurana, launched a direct-to-consumer oral care brand, Perfora, in August 2021 and created a distinct identity. Drawing inspiration from their experiences and shared vision, they set out to build a brand that resonated with modern consumers’ desire for clean, functional, and aesthetically pleasing products. Their journey began with a commitment to introducing chemical-free, plant-based formulations, filling a gap in the market for innovative oral care solutions.

The duo achieved success in February 2023 when they appeared on Shark Tank India Season 2. Their pitch impressed investors and resulted in a deal. They secured Rs. 80 lakh in exchange for a 2.5% equity stake, valuing Perfora at Rs. 32 crore. The investors-Peyush Bansal (CEO of Lenskart), Namita Thapar (Executive Director of Emcure Pharmaceuticals), and Vineeta Singh (Co-founder of Sugar Cosmetics)-recognized the potential of Perfora’s oral care vision. This exposure significantly boosted the brand’s visibility and credibility in the Indian market.

Raised Rs. 39.8 Crore from Investors

Following the show’s airing, Perfora recorded remarkable growth. By August 2023-exactly a year after their Shark Tank appearance-the company’s monthly sales grew from Rs. 70 lakh to Rs. 3.5 crore, marking a fivefold increase. One of the show’s investors, Namita Thapar, praised their progress, highlighting their ability to scale rapidly and efficiently. This momentum was further strengthened by another funding round, where Perfora raised Rs. 39.8 crore from investors such as RPSG Capital Ventures, Sauce VC, and Lotus Herbals Family Office. The funds were allocated to expanding their product portfolio and strengthening their market presence.

Commitment to Quality and Innovation
Perfora’s product line includes electric toothbrushes, water flossers, mouthwashes, teeth-whitening solutions, and tongue cleaners, all designed to enhance the daily oral care experience. Their dedication to quality and innovation has built a loyal customer base and established them as a strong player in the D2C oral care sector. However, the journey has not been without challenges. Alongside rapid growth came the pressure of scaling operations while maintaining quality. Reports surfaced about the company’s intense work culture, where employees were allegedly working long hours to meet the demands of the growing business. While such dedication is often seen in startups, it also sparked discussions around work-life balance and the importance of sustainable growth practices.

A Journey of Resilience and Adaptability
Despite these challenges, Perfora’s journey reflects resilience and adaptability. From a humble beginning to becoming a recognized name in the oral care industry, the brand’s story highlights the impact of innovation, strategic partnerships, and a clear vision. As they continue to expand their product range and reach, Perfora stands as a testament to the dynamic nature of India’s entrepreneurial landscape.
