Business Remedies | Rajshree Upadhyaya | July 27,2025 | Abhay and Smratika Sharma have carved out their identity by founding Kyari Innovations through the use of technology-driven solutions. The sibling duo grew up near Jim Corbett National Park, where human-wildlife conflict was not just a news headline but a daily challenge. Farmers and forest dwellers often experienced disruptions to their lives and livelihoods due to animal intrusions. These early experiences laid the foundation of the duo’s mission-to bridge the gap between people and nature through empathetic, tech-based solutions.
This mission first took shape in the form of AniDERS-an animal intrusion detection and deterrent system, designed to protect both farmland and wildlife. This non-lethal system used light and sound to gently deter animals, and its effectiveness received recognition from the World Wide Fund for Nature, ICAR, NRDC, and other institutions.
Focus on Forest Guards and Rangers
After their first innovation gained popularity, the founders shifted their focus to frontline workers-forest guards and rangers-who face real threats in the field. This resulted in the creation of the Smart Stick Guardian, a rugged, technology-enabled stick designed for protection and survival. Equipped with a high-lumen LED torch, panic alarm, built-in power bank, and a 10,000-volt electric probe, the Smart Stick quickly became the tool of choice for more than 2,000 forest personnel. Its long battery life, water-resistant body, and “Made in India” tag made it especially attractive to both government buyers and adventure enthusiasts. Priced between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 17,500, it offered a healthy margin of nearly 30%, as the manufacturing cost was kept relatively low.
Opening Doors to Strategic Guidance and Partnerships
Kyari’s financial progress in the early years was promising. From Rs. 8 lakh revenue in FY 2018-19, the company’s earnings rose to Rs. 30 lakh in FY 2019-20 and further to Rs. 1.2 crore the next year. There was continued growth in FY 2021-22, with revenue reaching Rs. 1.4 crore. However, the following year saw a decline to Rs. 75 lakh, possibly due to market corrections or post-pandemic challenges. Even during the downturn, Kyari recorded strong monthly profit numbers, peaking at Rs. 5.1 lakh. Projections estimate that monthly revenue may reach Rs. 17 lakh. These figures helped Kyari enter Season 2 of Shark Tank India in a strong position.
On the show, Abhay and Smratika confidently presented their brand and asked for Rs. 51 lakh in exchange for just 1% equity-valuing the company at Rs. 51 crore. The sharks were impressed with the innovation but remained cautious about the valuation. After several offers and counteroffers, the founders struck a deal with Peyush Bansal and Anupam Mittal-Rs. 51 lakh for 6% equity-bringing the valuation down to Rs. 8.5 crore. This episode proved to be a turning point, bringing Kyari into the national spotlight and opening doors to strategic guidance and partnerships.
Diversification in Product Portfolio
After Shark Tank, Kyari expanded into three verticals: Kyari Wildlife for detection systems, Kyari Innovation for survival tools, and Kyari Adventure targeting the growing outdoor gear market. The founders diversified their product portfolio beyond forest applications, venturing into consumer-centric offerings such as self-watering plant systems and smart gardening products. While this broadened the brand’s scope, it also received mixed reactions. Discussions on Reddit questioned the founders’ understanding of new domains like gardening and raised concerns over their financial prudence. Some users pointed out the heavy marketing expenses despite limited cash flow.
A Unique Position at the Intersection of Technology, Ecology, and Safety
Despite such criticisms, Kyari continues to stand out as a brand born out of empathy and shaped by innovation. From the forest fringes to the national stage of Shark Tank India, its journey reflects the courage and foresight of its founders, who turned personal experiences into scalable solutions. The road ahead involves navigating competition, maintaining focus, and sustaining growth. Yet, Kyari has already carved out a unique niche at the intersection of technology, ecology, and safety-a space that is equally relevant for forest rangers and everyday adventurers alike.
