Rajshree Upadhyaya | Business Remedies | When Simran Khara founded Koparo in 2021, the decision came from a deeply personal place rather than a boardroom calculation. As a new mother, she became increasingly uneasy about the harsh chemical cleaners used daily in Indian homes, products that promised hygiene but often came with hidden risks for children, pets, and sensitive skin. This concern gradually evolved into curiosity, research, and experimentation, eventually shaping Koparo as a plant-based home care brand built on the belief that cleanliness should never come at the cost of health. What began as a solution for her own household soon revealed a larger gap in the market, one where safety, performance, and sustainability could coexist without compromise.

The name Koparo itself draws inspiration from kopra, or dried coconut, reflecting the brand’s reliance on coconut-derived surfactants and naturally sourced ingredients. From the outset, Simran was clear that Koparo would not position itself as a niche alternative but as a full replacement for conventional cleaners. The brand’s early product portfolio focused on everyday essentials such as floor cleaners formulated to work across surfaces without toxic residues and laundry detergents designed to remove stains while remaining gentle on skin and fabrics. Over time, Koparo expanded thoughtfully into fabric conditioners, dishwashing liquids, and hand washes, each created to eliminate common irritants like ammonia, chlorine, parabens, triclosan, and artificial dyes. To round out the home care ecosystem, the company also introduced fresheners and fragrances along with cleaning accessories, ensuring consumers could transition their entire cleaning routine to safer alternatives.

Simran’s professional background played a critical role in shaping Koparo’s disciplined growth. Having worked with McKinsey and Company and Star TV, and later leading a digital media startup as CEO, she brought strategic clarity and operational rigor to the venture. This blend of corporate experience and founder empathy helped Koparo strike a balance between brand storytelling and execution. In its early years, the brand found resonance among urban consumers who were increasingly conscious of ingredient labels and long-term health implications. This traction attracted institutional interest and early funding support, allowing Koparo to invest in formulation research, branding, and distribution while staying true to its core promise of toxin-free living.

Koparo’s defining moment in the public eye came with its appearance on Shark Tank India Season 3. Simran presented the brand not merely as a cleaning company, but as part of a broader shift towards conscious consumption in Indian households. She sought Rs. 70 lakh for a 1 percent equity stake, valuing the company at Rs. 70 crore. The pitch stood out for its clarity of purpose and market insight, drawing interest from multiple Sharks. Ultimately, Aman Gupta of boAt and Vineeta Singh of Sugar Cosmetics came together to back the brand, recognizing the long-term potential of a home care company built around safety, trust, and modern consumer values. Their investment marked a significant milestone, positioning Koparo among a new generation of purpose-led consumer brands to emerge from the show.

Beyond the funding, the Shark Tank platform amplified Koparo’s story and brought mainstream attention to the idea that cleaning products could be both effective and gentle. It also reinforced Simran’s conviction that Indian consumers were ready to question long-standing norms and demand better alternatives for their homes. With a growing emphasis on sustainability and wellness, Koparo’s narrative aligned with a cultural shift towards mindful living, where everyday choices reflect deeper values.

From a mother’s concern to a nationally recognized brand idea, Simran Khara’s journey with Koparo reflects how personal insight can evolve into meaningful entrepreneurship. By reimagining everyday cleaning through the lens of safety and responsibility, Koparo carved out a distinct voice in the home care space, showing that thoughtful innovation can quietly transform routines that millions take for granted.
