Business Remedies | Rajshree Upadhyaya | In 2017, driven by a shared mission, Pranav Bajaj and Ravjot Singh Arora founded Medulance, carving a unique identity in India’s emergency medical services sector. Their inspiration stemmed from a personal tragedy-Ravjot’s grandfather passed away because an ambulance arrived late. This incident deeply moved them, fueling their determination to ensure that others in similar emergencies receive timely medical support.

Realizing the gaps in traditional ambulance services, they envisioned a technology-driven solution to bridge the gap between patients and immediate care. Their idea was revolutionary-a platform that enabled users to book ambulances instantly, reducing response times through smart technology. The services were designed to be accessible, aiming to reach patients within critical timeframes. With a focus on quick deployment and efficiency, Medulance set out to save lives while giving peace of mind to distressed families.

An Impressive Growth Story
By 2023, Medulance had expanded its reach to more than 500 cities, operating a fleet of over 7,500 ambulances. Their services helped over 800,000 people, including 200,000 COVID-19 patients, underscoring their critical role in public health during the pandemic. This expansion highlighted not only the effectiveness but also the necessity of their services within India’s healthcare landscape.

Winning Investors’ and Industry Leaders’ Attention
Financially, Medulance showcased strong performance. In FY 2021-22, the company reported revenues of Rs. 24 crore with a 24% profit margin. This profitability underlined the viability of their business model and the rising demand for reliable emergency medical services in India. Their inspiring journey soon caught the attention of both investors and industry leaders.

A turning point came when they appeared on Shark Tank India – Season 2. Presenting their achievements, growth potential, and the urgent need for efficient emergency medical services, the founders sought funding to scale operations. The pitch impressed the Sharks. While Amit Jain (Co-founder of CarDekho) offered Rs. 5 crore for 5% equity, the founders opted for a counter-offer from Namita Thapar (Emcure Pharmaceuticals), Aman Gupta (boAt), and Peyush Bansal (Lenskart), who collectively invested Rs. 2 crore for 2% equity-valuing the company at Rs. 100 crore.

This deal proved to be a milestone, equipping Medulance with both capital and strategic guidance to accelerate its growth. Post the show, Medulance gained momentum, enhancing its tech infrastructure, expanding its fleet, and diversifying its services. They introduced MeduAlert, a subscription-based emergency response system for corporate employees, and MeduClinic, a mobile medical unit providing on-site healthcare services. These innovations further cemented Medulance’s position as a leader in the emergency medical sector.

A Source of Inspiration for Ambitious Entrepreneurs
From a heartfelt mission to a thriving enterprise, Medulance’s journey reflects the power of innovation and determination. Their story serves as an inspiration for aspiring entrepreneurs, demonstrating how addressing a critical social need with a thoughtful, scalable solution can create both meaningful impact and lasting success.
