Shruti Kothari | Jaipur | Business Remedies| April 10,2025 |  In a major push to modernize its naval aviation capabilities, India has cleared a Rs.63,000 crore deal to procure 26 Rafale Marine fighter jets from France. The advanced negotiations mark a critical phase in strengthening India’s maritime defense posture, with the aircraft set to operate from the country’s indigenous aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
According to senior defense officials and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, the procurement is in its final stages and is likely to be approved shortly by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). “There’s only one level of discussion left before formal clearance. We expect the deal to be signed very soon,” Admiral Tripathi stated during a recent briefing.

What the Deal Includes
8 22 single-seater Rafale-M (Marine) jets
8 4 twin-seater trainer variants
8 Designed for carrier-based operations, these jets will
replace the aging fleet of Russian-origin MiG-29K
fighters.

Why Rafale Marine?
The Rafale-M, a naval variant of the combat-proven Rafale fighter, brings cutting-edge features such as:
8 Meteor long-range air-to-air missiles
8 Exocet anti-ship missiles
8 Omni-role avionics and carrier takeoff/landing capabilities
With advanced stealth, high maneuverability, and combat readiness in diverse sea states, the Rafale-M is expected to significantly bolster India’s air dominance in the Indo-Pacific region.

Deal Structure and Timeline
8 Estimated Value: Rs. 63,000 crore
8 Acquisition Mode: Government-to-Government (G2G) deal with France
8 Delivery Timeline: First batch expected by 2027
French authorities have reportedly offered a price concession after extended negotiations, making the package more favorable to Indian strategic and financial interests.
