India’s power demand declines in November due to lower temperatures as renewable energy generation rises

Lower temperatures ने November में India की power demand को cool कर दिया, and consumption slipped by 0.3% year-on-year to 123 billion units (BUs) compared to 124 BUs last year 📉.

Crisil Intelligence

  • Madhya Pradesh में 11% demand गिर गई due to severe cold-wave conditions

  • और Rajasthan में 7% dip आई because of cold weather ❄️

⚙️ Power Generation |

While demand cooled, power generation slightly बढ़ी and rose 0.5% YoY to 134 BUs in November ⚡.

🌞 Renewable Energy Gaining |

Renewable energy-based generation में 17% year-on-year growth दर्ज की गई, marking the eighth consecutive increase this fiscal 🌱.
This growth is mainly due to rising capacity additions across solar and wind projects.

On the other hand, coal-based generation fell for the second time this quarter, showing a shift in the power mix.

Coal का share अब total output में घटकर 72% रह गया, from 75% last year, though it still remains flexible to ramp up or down as demand changes.

🪨 Coal Stock Status |

As of November 30:

  • Thermal power plants had 54 million tonnes (MT) of coal

  • Inventory levels stood at 18 days, up from 14 days last year

Meanwhile, offtake to the power sector declined 5.5% YoY in November, while April–October period में 3.17% decline हुआ।
This highlights that thermal coal demand is falling as renewable energy expands.

📈 Outlook |

Despite short-term cooling, power demand is still expected to track India’s economic growth.

Crisil Intelligence estimates that:

  • Power demand may grow 1–3% this fiscal year

  • Expected range: 1,715–1,725 BUs

This will be supported by steady economic performance और rising disposable income 💡.
However, weather conditions will remain a key risk factor for demand fluctuations.

India की economy इस fiscal में भी करीब 7% GDP growth maintain करने की उम्मीद है, which should support power consumption in the medium term 🚀.

✅ Conclusion |

Short-term में winter ने demand को ठंडा किया है, but the long-term story remains positive, especially with renewable energy taking the lead.
India’s power sector is clearly moving towards a greener and more efficient future 🌍⚡
