Jaipur | Rajshree Upadhyaya | By launching the research-driven oral care brand Edinora, Prabhakaran Gopinathan, Ashika Nambiar, and Praveen Prabhakaran Jayana established a unique position in India’s oral care market. Edinora is a Kerala-based oral care startup that gained nationwide recognition after appearing on Shark Tank India Season 5 in 2026.
The company was officially founded in 2022 by Prabhakaran Gopinathan and Praveen Prabhakaran Jayana, who spent years researching safer alternatives to conventional oral care products before entering the market. The founders believed that many widely used toothpastes rely heavily on synthetic ingredients that may disturb the natural balance of the oral microbiota. This concern eventually became the foundation of Edinora and helped shape its identity as a research-based herbal oral care brand.
Before commercially launching the company, Prabhakaran Gopinathan stated that they had spent decades studying ingredient formulations and their long-term effects on oral health. The founders focused on creating products that were not only herbal but also edible-grade and safe to swallow – a positioning that immediately helped the startup stand out in India’s highly competitive oral care market.
Instead of depending on aggressive marketing or celebrity endorsements, Edinora focused on ingredient transparency and consumer education, which gradually helped the company build trust among customers. The company built its portfolio around herbal oral care products made using Ayurvedic ingredients such as neem, miswak, mulethi, clove, turmeric, ginger, mint, black pepper, amla, and honey. The formulations were also free from ingredients such as SLS, parabens, triclosan, silica, and artificial colours.
Its key offerings included: Edinora Prime for regular oral hygiene.
Edinora SensiPro for sensitivity-related concerns.
A specially designed children’s toothpaste variant that was safe to swallow.
A Large Part of the Initial Customer Base Came From Kerala
The company also explored the personal care products category, although oral care remained its primary business focus. A breakthrough moment for Edinora came when the founders appeared on Episode 40 of Shark Tank India Season 5. During the pitch, the company sought Rs. 2 crore for 5 percent equity, valuing the business at Rs. 40 crore.
Alongside Prabhakaran Gopinathan and Praveen Prabhakaran Jayana, team members Ashika Nambiar and Praveen PJ also played important operational roles in the business. The founders revealed that a large portion of their early customer base came from Kerala, and tele-calling became one of their strongest sales channels because direct interaction was necessary to educate customers about oral microbiota and herbal formulations.
At the time of the pitch, the company stated that it had already generated revenue worth several crores while remaining largely bootstrapped. The founders also shared that Edinora SensiPro contributed a major share of total sales, indicating growing demand for sensitivity-focused herbal oral care products.
The Company Successfully Built a Niche Audience
The sharks were particularly interested in the startup’s edible-grade positioning and the years of research behind its formulations. Aman Gupta eventually offered Rs. 2 crore for 10 percent equity, valuing the business at Rs. 20 crore, and the founders accepted the deal.
As of 2026, Edinora continues to operate actively in the Indian oral care market. The company remains focused on increasing awareness around microbiome-friendly and Ayurvedic oral care solutions while gradually expanding its presence beyond Kerala.
Although it competes with major FMCG brands that possess significantly larger distribution networks and marketing budgets, Edinora has managed to build a niche audience looking for cleaner and research-based alternatives for daily oral hygiene.
Its journey demonstrates how a deeply research-oriented regional startup can attract national attention by solving familiar problems through a differentiated approach.
