Rajshree Upadhyaya | Business Remedies | March 6, 2025 | Alakh Pandey’s journey is a story of grit, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to making quality education accessible to students across India. From growing up in a financially struggling household to building a ₹9,100 crore EdTech empire, his rise is nothing short of remarkable. His platform, Physics Wallah, has redefined the way students prepare for competitive exams, proving that passion and purpose can create an industry-changing revolution.

Born on October 2, 1991, in Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad), Uttar Pradesh, Alakh Pandey’s childhood was marked by financial hardships. His father, Satish Pandey, was a private contractor, while his mother, Rajat Pandey, worked as a school teacher. The family’s financial struggles forced them to sell their home and move into a rented slum apartment. Witnessing these hardships at a young age, Alakh took it upon himself to contribute. By the time he was in the sixth grade, he was already tutoring younger students, earning ₹200 per session. His passion for teaching was evident early on, but his dream back then was to become an actor.

Despite his early tutoring experience, Alakh’s academic journey was challenging. Like many aspiring engineers, he attempted the IIT-JEE entrance exam but did not qualify. Instead, he secured admission to Harcourt Butler Technical Institute (HBTI), Kanpur, through the Uttar Pradesh State Combined Entrance Examination (UPSCEE). However, college life didn’t resonate with him. By his fourth year in the mechanical engineering program, he realized his true calling was teaching, not engineering. He made the bold decision to drop out, a move many around him questioned, but one that would set the foundation for his extraordinary success.

In 2014, Alakh launched his YouTube channel, “Physics Wallah,” with a simple yet powerful mission—to make high-quality education accessible to students from all backgrounds. His unique teaching style, which simplified complex physics concepts with real-life analogies, quickly gained traction. Unlike other platforms that charged exorbitant fees, Alakh’s content was free, making education accessible to those who couldn’t afford expensive coaching classes. By 2019, his YouTube channel had surpassed two million subscribers, establishing him as a trusted educator among JEE and NEET aspirants.

Recognizing the growing demand for structured online learning, Alakh joined forces with Prateek Maheshwari in 2020 to expand Physics Wallah into a full-fledged EdTech platform. Together, they launched the Physics Wallah app, offering affordable, high-quality courses for JEE and NEET aspirants. Competing against industry giants like Byju’s, Unacademy, and Vedantu, Physics Wallah carved its niche by focusing on affordability without compromising on quality. The results were astounding—the platform quickly gained millions of users, and in June 2022, Physics Wallah achieved unicorn status, securing $100 million in funding and reaching a valuation of ₹8,200 crore.

With success came rapid expansion. By 2023, Physics Wallah had established 67 offline coaching centers across 34 cities, making a mark beyond the digital space. The platform continued to innovate, introducing AI-driven learning tools, doubt-solving features, and exam preparation books. In 2024, the company raised another $210 million, pushing its valuation to ₹23,280 crore. Its user base had grown exponentially, and Physics Wallah was no longer just a YouTube channel—it had transformed into a dominant force in the Indian EdTech sector.

However, Alakh’s journey was not without challenges. In 2023, some of Physics Wallah’s top educators left the company, citing a shift from its original student-centric mission. They went on to create a rival platform, Sankalp Bharat. Around the same time, the company laid off 150 employees, leading to criticism regarding its work culture. Despite these setbacks, Alakh remained focused on his goal. In 2024, he filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court, challenging alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG results. This move reinforced his image as an educator who genuinely cared for students, further strengthening Physics Wallah’s credibility.

Under Alakh Pandey’s leadership, Physics Wallah remains one of the few profitable EdTech companies in India. While competitors struggled with massive losses, PW continued to generate substantial revenue. In 2021, the company reported a profit of ₹9.4 crore, which skyrocketed to ₹133.7 crore in 2022. By 2023, its revenue had reached ₹2,331 crore, with a profit of ₹108 crore. As Byju’s and other EdTech players faced declining user bases, industry experts predicted that Physics Wallah’s growth trajectory would only accelerate, further solidifying its dominance in the sector.

Beyond business, Alakh’s personal life has also drawn public interest. He is married to Shivani Dubey, a freelance journalist with an MSc in Chemistry. The couple met through a mutual friend at Alakh’s office, and their relationship blossomed over time. They tied the knot on February 22, 2023. Despite his success, Alakh remains deeply connected to his roots. He continues to teach on his platform, engaging with students regularly, and remains vocal about issues affecting them.

Today, Physics Wallah serves over 31 million students and operates 180 offline centers across India. With a strong focus on expanding AI-driven learning and regional language courses, the company is poised to revolutionize EdTech further. Alakh Pandey’s journey—from a boy struggling with financial hardships to the founder of a multi-billion-dollar education empire—is a testament to perseverance, vision, and an unyielding commitment to his mission. His story is proof that passion, when combined with dedication and a student-first approach, can transform not just an industry, but the lives of millions.
