Rajshree Upadhyaya | Business Remedies | Jaipur | April 18,2025 | In 1993, tucked within the buzzing lanes of Karol Bagh in Delhi, Shiv Rattan Goyal stood behind the counter of a modest garment store. At the time, it was just another local shop, but for Shiv, it was the beginning of something far greater. He wasn’t merely selling clothes, he was listening, observing, and slowly shaping a vision. He noticed a growing gap in the market: Indian men were beginning to care more about style and fit, yet the market lacked brands that offered fashionable, quality menswear at affordable prices. This insight planted the first seed of what would later become Richlook, a name redefining middle-class fashion aspirations.
From that single shop, Shiv set out to build a brand that didn’t compromise on quality while remaining accessible. Richlook was born as a homegrown solution to the evolving fashion tastes of Indian men. It quickly found its place in the wardrobes of those who sought both comfort and elegance. Shiv’s philosophy was rooted in slow, steady, and strategic growth. By 2006, the brand began opening its exclusive stores, clean, compact outlets that offered a consistent customer experience. These weren’t just retail spaces; they were extensions of the brand’s identity, stylish yet grounded, much like its founder’s approach to business.
A key factor in Richlook’s success was its commitment to quality. The company invested in a 60,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Sonepat, Haryana, ensuring every garment met high standards in stitching, finish, and design. This hands-on control over production gave Richlook an edge, allowing it to build customer trust while maintaining affordability. The pricing, ranging from INR 800 to 3,000, was carefully designed to appeal to a broad demographic without sacrificing the brand’s integrity.
Shiv’s retail acumen was visible in every detail, from store layouts to product placements. Core items were strategically positioned to drive sales, while newer collections were displayed prominently to attract attention. Each decision stemmed from his deep understanding of how consumers moved, chose, and shopped. He believed in offering not just clothes, but a seamless shopping experience. This strategy worked well, allowing Richlook to maintain compact store sizes and optimize returns.
Expansion, however, wasn’t rushed. Shiv believed in sustainable scaling. Richlook adopted a franchise model, carefully selecting partners with retail experience and offering them healthy annual returns. With over 55 stores spread across 28 cities, 30 of them franchise-owned, the brand created a strong national presence without losing control. Remarkably, over 85% of these outlets remained profitable, a testament to Shiv’s meticulous planning and the brand’s strong appeal. As retail evolved, Richlook kept pace. In 2013, the brand entered the digital space through leading e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Myntra, and Flipkart, eventually launching its website a year later. While online sales contributed modestly at first, Shiv understood their long-term importance and continued investing in digital growth.
What truly distinguished Richlook was the culture Shiv built within. The company nurtured a work environment that was professional yet engaging, with over 300 employees working together in a space that valued ethics, creativity, and social responsibility. From CSR campaigns to active social media engagement, the brand extended its impact beyond sales and into community-building.
Shiv also learned from missteps along the way. Larger stores with high investment didn’t always yield expected returns. This led to smarter models, smaller outlets, centralized inventory, and digital in-store ordering systems that allowed customers to access products from other locations if unavailable locally.
Today, Richlook is more than just a menswear brand; it’s the story of a quiet revolution in Indian retail, led by a man who turned market gaps into milestones. Shiv Rattan Goyal’s journey from a Karol Bagh shopkeeper to the founder of a nationally respected brand reflects not just business sense but a deep commitment to quality, value, and the everyday Indian consumer.
