10-Minute Delivery Vs Trust: How Kirana Stores Are Fighting Quick Commerce

Charu Bhatia | Business Remedies | In India’s fast-evolving retail landscape, the race for convenience is heating up. Quick commerce platforms like Zepto, Blinkit, and Swiggy Instamart promise groceries and essentials at lightning speed, often within 10 minutes. But despite the allure of instant delivery, neighbourhood Kirana stores are proving that trust, personal service, and local knowledge remain powerful advantages.

The rise of quick commerce has undeniably disrupted traditional retail. App-based platforms offer time-sensitive discounts, live tracking, and a seemingly endless selection of products. Urban millennials, in particular, have embraced this convenience, with micro-moments of ordering snacks, beverages, or daily essentials driving rapid adoption. However, for all its speed, quick commerce faces inherent limitations: delivery availability is restricted to certain areas, peak-hour delays are common, and the human touch, a hallmark of Kirana service, is absent.
Kirana stores, often family-run and embedded in the community, are leveraging these strengths to retain relevance. Store owners offer personalised recommendations, credit facilities, and flexibility in packaging or product substitutes, services that apps cannot replicate. “Our regular customers know that if they run out of milk or vegetables, we’ll find a solution immediately, even outside business hours,” says Anil Kumar, owner of a Mumbai-based Kirana store.

Technology is helping Kiranas compete more effectively. Many are now adopting digital billing, UPI payments, and inventory management apps, enabling faster service and better stock tracking. Some are even partnering with quick-commerce platforms as last-mile fulfilment points, combining speed with the credibility of local knowledge.

Consumer trust, built over years of daily interaction, remains a critical differentiator. While apps can promise instant delivery, it is the Kirana store that ensures quality, handles replacements personally, and delivers a sense of reliability. In many neighbourhoods, this trust outweighs the lure of a 10-minute delivery, particularly for perishable goods.

Experts believe the future of Indian grocery retail will be hybrid. “Quick commerce may capture convenience-driven purchases, but for long-term loyalty, Kiranas’ human-centric approach will continue to hold sway,” says retail analyst Priya Nair. The balance lies in combining digital tools, timely delivery, and the irreplaceable personal touch, a formula that allows Kiranas to thrive even in the age of lightning-fast apps.
In a market where speed often dominates headlines, Kirana stores prove that relationships, trust, and understanding local needs remain the ultimate competitive edge.
