Diagnosed at an early age, she endured years of painful finger pricks and expensive glucose tests, spending nearly Rs. 15,000 monthly to monitor her blood sugar. This relentless routine became the spark for a life-changing idea.
Driven by the desire to free herself and others from the pain of needles, Varshita made the bold decision to drop out of IIT and pivot to biotechnology – not just for a degree, but to create a solution born out of lived experience. In 2019, during the Smart India Hackathon, she met electronics engineer Vimal Kumar, who was inspired by her vision for a non-invasive glucometer. Together, they co-founded VivaLyf Innovations, determined to turn pain into precision.
Their flagship product, AzaLyf, became a reality by combining optical spectroscopy and machine learning. Designed to fit in the palm of the hand, the device estimates blood glucose levels in under a minute – with no pricks, no blood, and no bandages. Simply scan your finger. With an impressive accuracy rate of 94-97%, AzaLyf connects to a multilingual mobile app that not only displays readings, but also reminds users to take medications, logs test data, and even facilitates virtual doctor consultations.
Priced affordably between Rs. 4,000-Rs. 5,000, the device aims to make diabetes care accessible across India, especially in rural and semi-urban areas where traditional healthcare infrastructure is limited.
Support from Aspire-TIDE Incubator
During the product development phase, the duo received support from the Aspire-TIDE incubator at the University of Hyderabad. Their goal extended beyond just a device – they envisioned an ecosystem of affordable, user-friendly diagnostic tools. AzaLyf offered more than just convenience; it restored dignity to diabetes patients long burdened by painful routines. Inclusive features like language customization and voice support ensured ease of use for the elderly and tech-unfamiliar populations.
Shark Tank India: A Game-Changer
VivaLyf’s breakthrough moment came on Shark Tank India, where Varshita and Vimal showcased their innovation. Their story and mission resonated deeply with the Sharks, especially Peyush Bansal, whose mother is diabetic. Along with Anupam Mittal, he invested Rs. 56 lakh for a 33.33% equity stake. This funding transformed VivaLyf overnight, bringing in thousands of inquiries. Bansal even called AzaLyf his favorite product on the show, underscoring its emotional and market value.
Focus on Validation and Scale
Post Shark Tank, VivaLyf shifted focus to validation and scalability. They joined the RICH-Ed accelerator, receiving support for clinical trial design, regulatory processes, and partnerships with labs and hospitals. Mentorship from Bhanu Prakash Varla helped streamline operations as the team prepared for pre-clinical trials across diverse user groups. Their goal was to manufacture over 100,000 units per month, ensuring nationwide availability – even in India’s remotest corners.
Not Just a Product – A Response to Pain
The journey wasn’t without hurdles. Like many deep-tech startups, maintaining momentum through long clinical and regulatory timelines was a challenge. At one point, rumors surfaced that Varshita had left for another startup, though no official confirmation was made. These whispers reflect the immense pressure and uncertainty faced by healthcare innovators in India.
Despite speculation, the vision behind VivaLyf remains powerful. AzaLyf is not just a device – it’s a response to suffering, a convergence of empathy and engineering. For every diabetic patient who fears the prick, AzaLyf offers relief, dignity, and hope. What started as a deeply personal mission for Varshita and Vimal now holds the promise of transforming preventive healthcare for millions.
