Rajshree Upadhyaya | Business Remedies | March 10, 2025 | Sudha Murty’s journey is a remarkable blend of resilience, intellect, and deep-rooted compassion. Born as Sudha Kulkarni on August 19, 1950, in Shiggaon, Karnataka, she grew up in a family where education was paramount. Her father, Dr. R.H. Kulkarni, was a surgeon, while her mother, Vimala Kulkarni, was a schoolteacher. This environment nurtured her love for learning and cultural values, shaping the foundation of her literary works that would later touch millions of lives. From a young age, Sudha displayed a keen intellect and an unshakable determination to break barriers, traits that would define her extraordinary career.

Excelling academically, she pursued a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from B.V.B. College of Engineering & Technology (now KLE Technological University), where she emerged as the top student, earning a gold medal from the Chief Minister of Karnataka. Her pursuit of excellence led her to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, where she completed her Master’s in Computer Science. Despite her stellar academic record, gender biases loomed large in the corporate world. Undeterred, she challenged the status quo by writing a letter to the chairman of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company (TELCO), questioning their policy of hiring only male engineers. Her bold stance led to her historic appointment as the first female engineer in the company in 1968, opening doors for many women in the engineering sector.

Her journey took another defining turn when she married N.R. Narayana Murthy in 1978. With her unwavering faith in his vision, she lent him ₹6,000 from her personal savings to co-found Infosys, a company that would revolutionize India’s IT landscape. While Narayana Murthy focused on shaping Infosys into a global IT giant, Sudha continued her professional career, ensuring financial stability for their family during the company’s early years. Her role was not just that of a supportive spouse but an equal partner in their shared dream.

Her commitment to social change took center stage when she founded the Infosys Foundation in 1996. As its chairperson, she spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at improving healthcare, education, and rural development. Under her leadership, the foundation built thousands of libraries in schools, constructed homes for disaster-stricken families, and significantly improved sanitation facilities across rural India. Her relentless work in disaster relief efforts, spanning earthquakes, tsunamis, and floods, showcased her deep empathy and proactive approach to humanitarian crises.

Beyond her philanthropic work, Sudha Murty is an acclaimed writer whose stories have left an indelible mark on readers. Writing in both English and Kannada, her books encompass a wide range of genres, including novels, travelogues, and memoirs. Many of her works draw inspiration from her personal experiences and cultural roots, making them deeply relatable. Her novel Dollar Bahu, which explores the complexities of Indian family life and the lure of foreign shores, was adapted into a television series, further cementing her influence as a storyteller.

Her immense contributions to literature and social work have been widely recognized. She was honored with the Padma Shri in 2006, followed by the Padma Bhushan in 2023, acknowledging her unparalleled impact on society. Her legacy continues to expand as she was nominated as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha in March 2024, solidifying her influence in shaping national discourse on education, philanthropy, and literature.

On the personal front, Sudha Murty and Narayana Murthy built a life centered around values and simplicity, raising two children, Akshata and Rohan. Akshata Murty, now the wife of Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, carries forward her mother’s legacy of compassion and social responsibility in her own ways.

Sudha Murty’s life is a testament to the power of knowledge, courage, and generosity. From breaking barriers as a female engineer to empowering thousands through her philanthropic work and literature, she continues to inspire generations. Her story is a reminder that with determination and a heart committed to service, one individual can make a lasting difference in the world.
