BR Team | Jaipur | India has surpassed Germany to become the world’s third-largest generator of electricity from wind and solar energy in 2024, according to the sixth edition of Ember’s Global Electricity Review released on April 8, 2025. This milestone reflects India’s significant progress in renewable energy, driven by substantial solar capacity additions. While India’s clean energy generation is on the rise, it remains below the global average. Globally, wind and solar accounted for 15% of electricity generation, whereas India’s contribution was 10%. This suggests room for further growth to meet and exceed global benchmarks.

8 Solar capacity growth: In 2024, India added 24 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity, more than doubling the additions from the previous year. This expansion positioned India as the third-largest solar market globally, following China and the United States.
8 Wind & solar generation: Wind and solar energy contributed 15% to global electricity generation in 2024. India’s share stood at 10%, indicating a rapid increase in renewable energy production.
8 Total renewable energy capacity: As of December 2024, India’s total renewable energy installed capacity reached 209.44 GW, marking a 15.84% increase compared to 180.80 GW in December 2023.
To achieve its ambitious goals, India needs to double its annual additions of solar and wind capacity over the next five years. Addressing infrastructure bottlenecks, enhancing energy storage capacity, and streamlining project approvals will be critical to sustaining this growth trajectory.
