Modi-Yunus Bangkok meeting sparks hope!

BR Team | Jaipur | In a significant development poised to reshape regional dynamics, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus are scheduled to hold their first in-person meeting today on the sidelines of the 6th Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical
and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit in Bangkok. This meeting marks a pivotal moment in India-Bangladesh relations, coming after a period of political transition in Dhaka.

The bilateral talks are set against the backdrop of Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who assumed office on August 8, 2024, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The formation of this interim government has been met with both domestic and international attention, as it navigates the complex political landscape of Bangladesh.

Officials from both nations have expressed optimism about the upcoming dialogue. A senior official in Dhaka confirmed the meeting, stating, “I can tell you that the meeting will take place,” while sources in New Delhi echoed this sentiment, noting, “It is expected that they’ll meet.” The agenda for the Modi-Yunus meeting is anticipated to cover a broad spectrum of issues, including trade, security, connectivity, and people-to-people ties. Given the strategic importance of both countries in the Bay of Bengal region, enhanced cooperation could lead to significant economic and geopolitical benefits.
