Department of Telecommunications (DoT) ने messaging platforms, including WhatsApp, को directive जारी किया है कि वे users को हर छह घंटे में automatically log out करें.
Directive में कहा गया है कि user का subscriber identity module (SIM), जो registration के लिए इस्तेमाल हुआ था, web-based platforms जैसे WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Arattai, Snapchat, Sharechat, और अन्य से जुड़ा रहना चाहिए.

जैसा कि service SIM से linked रहनी चाहिए, WhatsApp Web और similar web companions को हर छह घंटे में log out करना होगा.
DoT circular के अनुसार, 90 दिनों के भीतर users original SIM के बिना इन apps को access नहीं कर पाएंगे और प्रत्येक web-based platform को चार महीनों में compliance report submit करनी होगी.
Government ने कहा कि यह कदम जरूरी था ताकि cyber fraudsters द्वारा messaging apps का misuse रोका जा सके, जो अक्सर SIM के बिना और India के बाहर से exploit करते हैं.

Tech companies ने कहा कि constant SIM checks और six-hour logouts user privacy को compromise करेंगे, multi-device convenience को तोड़ेंगे, और travelling के दौरान access को complicated बना देंगे.
Telecom operators ने इस move का समर्थन किया और बताया कि mandatory SIM binding activity को physical subscriber से traceable बनाएगी, जिससे सुरक्षा बढ़ेगी.
यह बदलाव Telecommunication Cybersecurity Amendment Rules, 2025 के तहत आया है, जिसमें Telecommunication Identifier User Entity की requirement introduce की गई थी, जिससे platforms को IMSI data तक access करना जरूरी होगा और global services जैसे WhatsApp को Indian users के लिए system re-engineer करना पड़ेगा.
